Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, SD). Once listed, I believe this will be the only non-library first edition for sale on the Internet. As you can see from the photos, the covers are in pretty remarkable condition. After all, the book was published in 1941. They are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. And there really isn't any wear that needs to be called out, maybe a thin wrinkle near the top edge of the spine. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. While the pages are aged toned, they're also exceptionally clean. In scrolling through, I didn't see any soiling at all. They're also in excellent condition, without any creases or dogeared corners. And there aren't any markings or attachments. There is a penned name (Kennedy Hill) at the top of the front inside cover. Or it may be a place (Kennedy Hall). Not really sure. More importantly, it is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. Included with the book is a Columbia University Press 'With the compliments of the Publishers' 4 x 3" card. It is in very good condition. Here's some information about the author: 'Dr. Marion John Bradshaw was a famed theologian and pioneer in the art of photography. Following his graduation from Hiram College, he pastored the Christian Church in Ada, Ohio from 1911 to 1914 while coaching baseball and football for Ohio Northern University. A gifted athlete, his prowess in baseball attracted the interest of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Browns. Dr. Bradshaw entered Columbia University and then Union Theological Seminary where he earned his Bachelor of Divinity degree with summa cum laude honors in 1917. In 1921 he took a position as student secretary with the Congregational Education Society in charge of the Institutions and Student Life Department. He received his Doctor of Divinity degree at the University of Maine in 1930. He was a member of the American Philosophy Association for 50 years, and of Theta Pi honorary fraternity. He was ordained to the Ministry in the Disciples of Christ Church. He ultimately became a professor of the philosophy of religion at the Bangor Theological Seminary in Bangor, Maine. In 2013, a former student who graduated from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1956, in paying tribute to his former professor of ethics, described Dr. Bradshaw as "formidable." "He stood 6-feet-four, had huge hands, hair like Brillo, and a five-o?clock shadow at 10 a.m." The saying around the seminary was, "when you leave this place, you will always remember Dr. Bradshaw.".
