Ma i legami sono personali, ai movimenti rimane esterno, non interviene sulle riviste, non sottoscrive dichiarazioni. E tuttavia lascia una singolare opera di pensiero sull'arte e sulle cose. Sono frasi che troviamo annotate su taccuini, fogli sparsi, pagine di cataloghi, o ricordate dagli amici e ricorrenti nelle interviste. È una materia di sostanza orale, sovente con il sapore della massima, fatta per essere tenuta a mente e ripetuta. La si chiama, per consuetudine, col nome di «aforismi». Radicata nelle origini rumene, nella preistoria contadina e pastorale dei Carpazi, entra con colta consapevolezza nel dibattito artistico moderno. Brancusi ebbe con poeti e letterati relazioni di consuetudine, da Apollinaire a Radiguet. Il primo saggio sulla sua opera è scritto da Ezra Pound, e una lirica di Lucian Blaga, L'Uccello sacro, è forse il testo critico più significativo sulla Maiastra. A New York, nel 1926, è presentato da Paul Morand alla personale della Brummer Gallery. Nello studio di impasse Ronsin stava appeso il ritratto di Joyce, tra la gente di casa c'era Henry-Pierre Roché, e l'ultimo incontro importante sarebbe stato con Ionesco.
