King and for Kegan Paul at the rear of the book; some surface loss at the front hinge; ~~First English translation of an important work (La Fortification Improvisee printed in 1870) by the Belgian soldier Alexis Brialmont who was the leading fortifications engineer of the late 19th century. His innovative approaches to fortifications evolved from his plans to protect Antwerp and other Belgian cities from the new long-range artillery. French engineers in the First World War were greatly influenced by Brialmont and successfully so. Critical analysis of fortifications on the battlefield and their effects on battle. Very Good binding.
