Hard Cover. Condition: Poor to Fair. No Jacket. J. Allen St. John (frontispiece + 3 plates) (illustrator). ----------hardcover, no dust jacket. The frontispiece and all 3 additional plates, facing pages 98, 178 and 242 by St. John are present. The placing of the plates, and the fact that there are 28 Burroughs titles listed in the advertisements at the back of the book, and no other writers, indicates that this is the Grosset & Dunlap printing of 1929 or possibly 1930. Zeuschner 756, Lukes 134-6. The book, in red cloth with black lettering and design to the front boards and spine, has the free front endpaper missing, a tear down half the spine at the front board, back board is creased, front board is starting to separate, wear to the spine extremities, wear to edges and corners, front boards are water-stained, and the book is a poor to fair but still reasonably solid and complete copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Bound in publisher's cloth. Hardcover. No dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Edges chipped. Owner's name on front end page. Though scholars have long disparaged Edgar Rice Burroughs, he remained a popular writer into the twenty-first century, suggesting that critical reappraisals are overdue. Dozens of his novels remain in print, and numerous enthusiasts keep publishing meticulously researched books and articles about his fiction. He displays powerful virtues as a mythmaker, capable of creating memorable heroes and persuasive imaginary worlds. While the jungle hero Tarzan is his most famous character, Burroughs also produced celebrated science-fiction novels, Westerns, historical novels, and adventures set in contemporary times.
