Hardcover - 2nd printing. A highly praised biography of this important Black artist. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. commented "Through her long association with Romare Bearden and his work, Mary Schmidt Campbell possesses a rare understanding of his life and artistry. In this beautifully written volume, she sensitively illuminates his biography and comprehensively traces the trajectory of his career. By brilliantly interweaving the political history of African Americans throughout the 20th century with the emergence of one our foremost artists, she has written a book that speaks to anyone who is interested in American history, art, and culture. Campbell writes that Bearden's legacy is his ability to create worlds; in this biography, she re-creates Bearden's world." Illustrated with photographs in both full color and black and white. Extensive notes, bibliography, index. xv, 443 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket.

The exhibition catalog for African American painter Beauford Delaney's retrospective at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1978, a year before his death. Delaney was born in Knoxville, TN, in 1901 and migrated to New York City during the Depression eventually settling in Greenwich Village. As a black, gay artist he lived a bifurcated existence, rarely allowing his gay, bohemian life in the Village to overlap with his frequent sojourns to Harlem where he socialized with leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1953 he moved to Paris where he continued to paint, although he would later be plagued by alcoholism and mental illness. He died in obscure poverty in 1979 and was buried in a potter's grave in Paris. Although his work continued to be exhibited following his death, he remained largely neglected until the 1990s. The catalog begins with a foreword by Museum director Mary Schmidt Campbell followed by a biographical essay by Richard Long. James Baldwin contributes an introduction to the exhibition followed by Henry Miller's 1945 chapbook, "The Amazing and Invariable Beauford Delaney" (part of Miller's "Outcast" series). Finally, Delaney's brother, Joseph, also a painter, contributes some brief comments. The rest of the book is devoted to Delaney's paintings. Oblong, perfect-bound, [96] p., illustrated. Owner's name penned to the title page, which is foxed; some sunning to the front cover.
