Alla città-fabbrica, tumultuosa oncentrazione di fabbriche e di classe-operaia, evocata in Europa dal modello di sviluppo degli anni '50 e '60, è indissolubilmente legato quel formidabile ciclo di lotte che, organizzatosi, dal '68 in poi, attorno alla figura egemone dell'operaio-massa, ha distrutto di quel modello le stesse fondamenta. Dalla massificazione della produzione alla massificazione delle lotte: le vicende della crisi in Occidente, e del male italiano in particolare, partono da tale determinazione. Ristrutturazione produttiva, Riconversione altro non sono allora se non intenzione strategica da parte capitalistica di rimodellare un territorio della produzione a bassa densità operaia che non possa più materialmente costituirsi come strumento di socializzazione e di circolazione delle lotte. Le armi di tale progetto sono: licenziamenti, espulsione dalle aree sviluppate di interi cicli produttivi ad alta intensità di lavoro, rottura delle concentrazioni operaie; in una parola: liquidazione della città fabbrica. La città fabbrica in transizione è dunque oggi un immenso laboratorio il cui destino è segnato dall'esito politico dello scontro tra i diversi progetti delle parti sociali che in essa si muovono: metropoli operaia, metropoli come ghetto di disoccupati e dei precari, oppure metropoli come compresenza di colletti bianchi, classe operaia tecnologizzata e precariato assistito, sul modello delle metropoli americane. Attorno a tali ipotesi, all'anatomia dell'iniziativa capitalistica e dei suoi strumenti entra tale processo, alla resistenza operaia ad esso, alle nuove forme di uso di classe del territorio a partire dalla nuova composizione del proletariato urbano, il progetto di questi Quaderni si muove. cm.15x21, pp.309, Rivista Quaderni del Territorio,1.
