Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, 1881
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. In "Reminiscences", first published posthumously in 1881, Thomas Carlyle shocked the literary world by his pointed honesty. He had delivered the manuscript for the book to his literary executor, James Anthony Froude, with instructions that it not be published until after his death, which Froude did. The book was first issued in London in 1881, and there soon followed an American edition, published early in the same year. This is the Charles Scribner's Sons edition, issued as 'The Authorized Edition'. At the time of publication, the book was published in the united States by two competing companies, Charles Scribner's Sons , and Harper's, both of whom claimed the publishing rights. It is not clear to me that the question was ever settled - at least in a bibliographical way. This copy's cover is fairly worn , and the interior is fairly well toned. (Read our full condition report below) ***************************************************** The book consists of five biographical sketches of family members, friends and associates who were important in his life, and to his development. The individuals are James Carlyle of Ecclefechan (Thomas's father); Edward Irving (a reverend in the Church of Scotland, sermon writer, essayist and teacher . One of his students was Jane Welsh, with whom Irving fell in love; but his engagement to another made his attachment to Jane impossible. Ironically it was Irving who introduced Jane To Carlyle who married her. Irving remained lifelong friends with them both); Lord Jeffrey (Francis), Carlyle's lawyer and editor, also a close friend; Jane Welsh Carlyle, Thomas's wife. Carlyle's essay on Jane shocked the literary world; Poet Laureate Robert Southey; and poet William Wordsworth. ****************************************************** The following is derived from Wikipedia : "All [the Reminiscences) are remarkable for the detail and immediacy with which they present events that had happened up to 50 years previously. They demonstrate Carlyle's extraordinary powers of memory, the accuracy of which is borne out by the evidence of his and his wife's contemporaneous letters. The Reminiscences have in recent years been called "an autobiographical masterpiece equal to any writing of its kind in the century" **************************************************** This copy came form the private library of Homer Stanley Goodwin, a distinguished citizen of Bethlehem PA, and has in his hand, a handsome signature, with his place of residence (Bethlehem , Pennsylvania, and a date : March 16, 1881. Goodwin (1833 - 1897) was the General Eastern Superintendent of Reading Railroad System, President of the American Society of Railroad Superintendents. He was also a 33° Mason. He was married to Elizabeth Faber Buehler. The Bethlehem Masonic Lodge, # 648 is named after Homer, being The H. Stanley Goodwin Lodge. Goodwin's signature, written in India ink in a dramatic, and graceful hand, is placed at the upper right corner of the front free end-paper. ************************************************* TITLE : Reminiscences / AUTHOR : Thomas Carlyle (1795 - 1881) / EDITOR : James Anthony Froude (1818 - 1894) / PREFACE : James Anthony Froude / IMPRINT : Charles Scribner's Sons / PLACE : New York / EDITION : First Scribner's Edition [ Re: the dispute between Harper and Scribner . Scribner's claimed their edition to be Authorized, and so identified it on binding and title page - but there was no legal definition of that term. I admit to not knowing if the dispute was settled. The date of the original owner's inscription is March 16th, 1881, which is pretty early considering that the book is posthumous and Carlyle died in February of that year. ] / PROVENANCE & SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : From the personal library Homer Stanley Goodwin of Bethlehem PA, with his dated signature. / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade Hardcover; contains a frontispiece with tissue guard (silhouettes of Carlyle's parents), and a Preface (By Mr. Froude); xii + 536 page.
