From Note to New Edition: Since the first edition of this book appeared, a few months before the depression of 1929 broke upon the people of the United States, education in this country has fallen on evil days. A brief and general account of that social distress is given in this edition. it is the report of a strange affliction, because the behavior of the American people toward schools and education in the present depression has differed widely from their conduct toward such interests in other economic crises. This book is intended to be no more than a narrative or historical sketch of education in this country. But in it an attempt has been made (1) to point out some of the economic, political, and religious facts of history which seem to have stood in the way of public education and to have retarded its growth, and seem to be doing so even now; (2) to direct attention to some of those forces and facts of history which seem to have encouraged its growth; and (3) to indicate some of the persistent educational problems of the present whose roots seem to be in the past, and, whenever possible, to suggest solutions for them. Emphasis is mainly upon a few conspicuous movements and leaders, and less upon theories than upon practices. Two entire chapters and parts of others are devoted to practices. Effort has been made through out the book to present the material as concretely as possible. Education, American Culture, United States History, U. S. History, Americana, American History. nslic.
