No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Collection of eight original letters related to the Andrew Jackson Rickoff family. Letters are on white, beige, or gray paper and include handwritten, printed, and typed text. Text in English except for the circular letter of credit in French. Circa 1888-1891. Various measurements from about 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" and 8 1/2" x 11." Fourteen pages. Each letter is very clean and intact except for slight age toning, occasional offsetting, and a few wrinkles and fold lines. Each letter and the entire collection are Very Good. Andrew Jackson Rickoff (1824-1899) was an American educator, school superintendent, and author based in Ohio. He was a close friend of President James A. Garfield. After graduating from Woodward College in Cincinnati and receiving a Master's Degree from Ohio University, Andrew became a teacher and superintendent in Portsmouth, Ohio. 1867 marked the beginning of Andrew's fifteen-year tenure as superintendent of schools in Cleveland during which he implemented a significant overhaul of the city's public schools by introducing co-education and reorganizing all schools into the primary, grammar, or high school levels. Andrew married Rebecca Davis Rickoff, a fellow educator who specialized in primary education. Rebecca contributed to some of the reforms that Andrew implemented. They had a daughter, Bertha Monroe Rickoff, who also became a Cleveland public school teacher. The following is a summary of the collection (the last six letters relate to one of the Rickoffs' trips to Europe). (1) Printed invitation (1888, 1 pp.; original envelope included) from Mrs. James Mason (Caroline Robinson) announcing the upcoming wedding of her daughter, Belle Hartford (Mason), to Harry Augustus Garfield on June 14, 1888 in Mentor, Ohio. Harry "Hal" Garfield was a lawyer, professor, public official, and one of the sons of President James A. Garfield. (2) Typed letter (June 20, 1888, 2 pp.) to Bertha Rickoff from Robert Clarke & Co., a publisher and bookseller, about one of her books to be published. (3) Typed cover letter (March 2, 1891, 1 pp.) from "Legation des Etats-Unis d'Amerique" to Rebecca Rickoff about (formerly) enclosed letters from "Mr. Loncoln" and a newspaper article about Andrew, which are not included in this collection. (4) Printed and handwritten circular letter of credit (April 17, 1891, 1 pp.) to Rebecca for her trip in Europe; text is in French. (5) Handwritten letter to Bertha from American Consul James Verner Long of the U.S. Consulate in Florence (1891, 4 pp.; original U.S. Consulate envelope included). (6) Handwritten letter to Roland J. Hemmick of the U.S. Consulate of Geneva from James Verner Long (c. 1891, 2 pp.; original U.S. Consulate envelope included). In this letter, Long introduces Rebecca and Bertha Rickoff to Hemmick, whom he describes as "warm personal friends of the late President Garfield's family." (7) Handwritten letter to Rebecca (c. 1891, 2 pp.) on "Legation des Etats Unis d'Amerique, L'Attache Naval" stationery. (8) Handwritten letter (c. 1891, 1 pp.) to Bertha from Charles (Estus?) Lamb, a friend. Lamb is not feeling well and asks Bertha if they can postpone their visit to the Garden to later in the afternoon so he has time to recuperate.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The transition from whole numbers to rational numbers and the associated mastery of the multiplicative conceptual field constitute an important development in lower secondary schooling. This study draws primarily on the theory of conceptual fields as a framework that is mathematical and enables a cognitive perspective by identifying the concepts- and theorems-in-action that lead to underlying concepts and theorems.Application of the Rasch model configures the location of both item difficulty and learner proficiency on one scale. Diagnostics explore the validity of the instrument for measurement. The ordering of items enables the analysis of hierarchical conceptual strands and additional insights into the mastery of concepts by subsets of learners at particular levels. The resulting matrix, of interactions of learner proficiency and item complexity, provides an overview of the concepts attained and not yet mastered. These insights permit teacher interventions specific to each learner subset at a shared common current zone of proximal development along the scale.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This unique title is designed to illustrate and foster how a closer working relationship between pediatricians and subspecialists can make childhood medicine work more seamlessly. Despite the common lack of training for pediatricians in pediatric neurosurgery, they are challenged almost daily with caring for children with neurologic conditions. Common Neurological Conditions in the Pediatric Practice is replete with a wide range of instructional case vignettes and is organized into sections that loosely approximate the neurologic development of a child and address issues that are commonly encountered. The first section reviews neurologic development and birth related trauma commonly seen in the neonatal intensive care unit. The second part addresses findings commonly encountered by a pediatrician in a child's first month of life. The third section is a comprehensive review of hydrocephalus. Part four describes state of the art imaging techniques for the central nervous system in children, from pre-natal ultrasound through MRI and CT; and the fifth part consists of individual explorations of common neurosurgical conditions that many pediatricians are uncomfortable managing, including brain tumors, spasticity, and vascular lesions to use as a reference tool when caring for a complex neurosurgical patient. Finally a series of chapters related to head trauma, including sections on non-accidental trauma and concussion management, completes the text. 460 pp. Englisch.
