"Matisse provides an introduction to, and fresh interpretations of, the work of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. This important catalogue draws from 270 of the artist's works in a variety of media to beautifully illustrate the insightful international contributions of essays by Matisse scholars. The writers approach the life and work of Matisse from varying perspectives: analytical of his drawings, sculptures, or prints; placing his practice in historical contexts; reflecting on formalism and imitation in his earlier works; or simply drawing out themes." - Publisher. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. This catalogue presents contributions across media - paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, cut-outs, illustrated books and costumes; carefully selected works which suggest the rich interconnections in his work. 'Matisse has always been a 'painter's painter and 'sculptor's sculptor'. His art is full of personal metaphor but it is not narrative in the strictest sense. Despite his objective of an art of balance, purity and serenity, his work cost him the most exhaustive struggle and effort, although he was at great pains to conceal that effort. Son-in-law Georges Duthuit wrote movingly on those paintings by Matisse which retained 'traces of scars' and 'revealed at the root the existence of the doubt which attaches to the very condition of man'. The profound solutions he sought were only achieved through immense discipline.' 'In his own writings on his art, Matisse stressed his dependence on nature, his commitment to figuration and his belief in artistic expression as the condensation of his 'sensations' derived from nature. Matisse's art was a struggle for perfection, but a struggle running contrary to the tides of current events. much has been written about Matisse's failure to come to grips in his art with the disturbing aspects of the changes of the modern world. Yet as he himself said, in 1908, 'All artists bear the imprint of their time' and it is not true that Matisse's art does not reflect any of the contradictions of life in this complicated century. His art, informed by a complex and disciplined intelligence, demands much more than a superficial response from the viewer. His is an art of extraordinary beauty but one which also reminds us that great artists transcend their times and ours' (Introduction).
