Bookplate of historian Peter Cozzens affixed to front endpaper. (Nevins I, pp. 67) (Howes C-191) (Dornbusch II: 1646) A scarce example, with only one hundred copies printed. A collection of letters from four brothers, "woven together with narrative by Robert Carter, form an unbroken chronicle of life in the army throughout some of the heaviest fighting of the eastern theater." (Eischer, 459) The brother's letters describe in great detail their battle experiences at Antietam, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, City Point and Appomattox.
