Octavo, softbound (stiff, full-color photo. illus. purple wrappers), xii, 251 pp. Very Good, with light edgewear. From Introduction: The stories in this book are built around a real person, a Floridian who lived with tragedy from birth, yet became a proficient and successful outdoorsman who unselfishly shared his hunting and fishing expertise and harvest with all he chanced to meet. With physical injury and lethal disease harassing him all the days of his life, he remained a faithful Christian until his untimely death in 1981. Seldom did a stranger know that this fisherman and hunter challenged death and disability from the day he left his mother's womb until he breathed his last at Cross Creek with a smile on his faith. Wracked by a brain tumor that surgery would not and could not heal, he lived with the grim reaper month after suffering month and then asked his God to grant him one more wish -- he wanted to kill one more 10-point buck and catch one more 10-pound bass and he would be ready to go. The plea was answered, and three days later the 35-year-old modern Dan'l Boone gave up the ghost. He had a last request for friends and relatives around his deathbed. "Doctors and surgeons could not destroy this brain tumor that is taking my life. They did their best and four operations only delayed my death. Now I want this horrible cancer destroyed so it can never harm another. Burn my body and cast my ashes over the water of Orange Lake. There I'll rest in peace with my Lord," he said, and he passed from this world to a better one. This is fiction, a novel if you will, but many of the fishing and hunting experiences written here were lived and enjoyed by Billy Barnett. His tragic illness at birth, his electrocution while playing hooky from school and subsequent recuperation and disability and his painful demise from an incurable brain tumor, are factual and the reason for writing this book. His life is a lesson. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Fiction, Historic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Cracker Fiction. bslic.
