Meggan Kehrli (illustrator). Dublin: Swan River Press:, 2021. First edition, hardcover, Limited, New in dust jacket, 103 pp. Cover artwork by: Meggan Kehrli This edition limited to 350 copies. "Written in Belfast and Bangor during the partition of Ireland, the six strange stories comprising Conall Cearnach's The Fatal Move are unusual documents of the time. 'Cearnach' was the pseudonym of F. W. O'Connell, a peculiar Protestant divine, linguist and Irish language scholar, oddball essayist, and early national broadcaster. His sole fiction collection showcases a wide scope: the conte cruel, the ghost story, the locked-room mystery, and the science-fictional satire. What unifies the stories is O'Connell's playful, outward-looking perspective, inspired by his love of the diverse cultures and languages of the world and his home country in equal measure. A unique figure in Irish life, Cearnach's character is perhaps more present in these stories than the anxieties of the time in which they were written. For this volume, Reggie Chamberlain-King provides an extensive introduction examining O'Connell's life and works." First edition, hardcover, Limited, New in dust jacket,

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Pp.96. Conall Cearnach was a pseudonym for Rev. F. W. O'Connell. The name is taken from Irish mythology where Conall Cearnach was Warrior of the Ulster Cycle & protector of Ulster during the boyhood of Cuchulainn. The superbly illustrated dustjacket is not ascribed to any particular artist. It has a kind of art nouveau style and to a degree is reminiscent of Harry Kernoff - now there's a mixture! This copy is a presentation inscribed by Bedel Stafford (who was Professor of Greek at Trinity College Dublin) to James Buckley ( who may well have been a U.S. Senator?). There is an imprint of the d.j. illustration on the front cover of the book. I have not been able to ascertain for definite whether this imprint was originally present or not, but suspect that it has imprinted itself over time from the d.j. to the cover. Scarce, especially, with signature & d.j. .

O?Connell (1875-1929), who often published as ?Conall Cearnach,? was known during his lifetime as the author of two Irish grammar books. He also wrote Gothic, Supernatural, and Fantastic stories, most notably the stories included in this volume.
