Fifty years after the war Dagmar Ostermann, a former prisoner at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Hans Wilhelm Munch, former Nazi and SS physician, talk face to face. In this rare interview Munch - the only SS member acquitted during the 1947 Cracow war crimes trial refers to himself as a *victim,* claiming that because he had to follow orders he was *no less a victim than his prisoners.* The Meeting grew out of a documentary film in which Münch was first interviewed by Viennese filmmaker Bernhard Frankfurter. As head of the Waffen SS Hygiene Institute Münch had controlled hundreds of lives. Intrigued by Munch's responses, Frankfurter arranged for Ostermann, whose mother was German and her father Jewish, to conduct a book-length interview, for which he provided a concluding essay. The dramatic structure of the discussion follows the events of the Nazi occupation chronologically. As Ostermann initiates questions regarding reasons for Munch's involvement (Was it a conscious endeavor? Did he participate willingly?), the book adds important new information to the testimonial literature of the Holocaust.

A Transcending Bond. Essays and Memoirs by American Germanists of Austro-Jewish Descent. Edited by Charles S. Merrill and Susan E. Cernyak-Spatz. 14 contributions combine scholarly commentary with vivid personal documentations of the work and life of 12 ex-Austrian Germanists, exiled to the US after 1938. The essays of this volume chronicle, in classically undramatic scholarly prose, the often terrifying dramatic events of their half-century hegira. Including contributions by Wolfgang Kraus, Harry Zohn, Walter H. Sokel, Joseph Fabry, George E. Wellwarth, Evelyn Torton-Beck, Peter Heller, Carl Steiner, Franz Bäuml, Alfred Hoelzel, Susan E. Cernyak-Spatz, Herbert Lederer, Walter Grossmann and Egon Schwarz. X,156 Seiten, gebunden (Literature and the Sciences of Man; Vol. 5/Peter Lang Verlag 1993) Mängelexemplar/near mint. Book
(Revised Edition). The study attempts to analyse the development of Holocaust literature by German and German-Jewish authors up to 1970. The study traces the development of the character of the «Nazi», specifically the SS-man, from a one-dimensional visual representation of evil to an individual personage, whose acts are prompted by various psychological motivations. A parallel development is traced in the treatment of the «Jewish victim» who progresses from being merely noble, pure and defenseless to a human being with equally strong individualistic traits. The main progression lies in the gradual assumption of responsibility for the events of the Holocaust by the whole nation, as perceived by the authors of the late 60s and 70s, instead of the dissociative attitudes of the immediate post-war writers. 2nd revised edition. 169 Seiten, gebunden (American University Studies. Series I: Germanic Languages and Literature; vol. 29/Peter Lang Verlag 1989) Mängelexemplar. Statt EUR 36,95 313 g. Sprache: en.
