Good only, with significant overall rubbing and handling to wrappers, heel of spine bumped, wrapper and page corners lightly bumped, and unfortunate 1" stain at top of fore-edge also affecting adjacent page margins not more than 1/4", with interior otherwise clean and unmarked; title page gently creased at upper corner. A copy in less-than-collectible condition, priced accordingly. Signed by Artist.

First Edition. First Printing, wrappered issue. Oblong quarto (23.5cm x 20cm); pictorial card wrappers; [viii],61,[3]pp; illus. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page in the year of publication to fellow Montana author, screenwriter, and outdoorsman William "Gatz" Hjortsberg: "For Gatz / Livingston / September 5 / Russell Chatham / Deep Creek / 1984." Light wear to extremities, faint vertical crease and some gentle sunning along left edge of front wrapper, with a faint sticker shadow at upper right corner of half-title page; contents clean; Very Good+ or better. Uncommon monograph on Chatham (1939-2019), who has written an autobiographical sketch titled "Myself, A Brief History," and included 24 full-color plates reproducing his paintings. Includes humorous and insightful contributions on Chatham and his work by friends and admirers. Provenance: From the collection of Montana author, screenwriter, and outdoorsman William Hjortsberg (1941-2017), a central figure in the coterie of Montana authors that included Chatham, Thomas McGuane, Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan, Tim Cahill, Peter Bowen, and others. A superb association copy.
