Condition: VG lg sz PB. Illus (illustrator). Facimile 1905. Civil War's most celebrated journal, written 1860-1865, by the wife of James Chesnut Jr., an aide to President Jefferson Davis and a brigadier-general in the Confederate Army. Vivid pictures of the social life that went on uninterruptedly in the midst of war; economic conditions that resulted from blockaded ports; manner in which spirits of the people rose and fell with each victory or defeat, and of the momentous events in Charleston, Montgomery, and Richmond. The Southern spirit of that time expressed in words genuinely spontaneous and frank.
