[ Rosley Books for Chesterton, The Inklings, Antiquarian books, Theology, Literature and History ] First published in English in 1909; GKC on George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 - 2 November 1950) was an Irish playwright. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which capacity he wrote many highly articulate pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. Nearly all his writings deal sternly with prevailing social problems, but have a vein of comedy to make their stark themes more palatable. Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, health care and class privilege. Neatly annotated by former owner throughout; Inside Cover: Emma Pérez queriendo entender a Shaw y a Chesterton / 'Emma Pérez wanting to understand Shaw and Chesterton'. Her name appears on the half-title dated 1945. The annotation varies in ink colour and probably spreads over a number of years. The owner obviously valued and treasured this book with many comments on Chestertons words - comments see page 241 - 'La otra isla del Tío Sam no es del Tío Sam' translates as 'Uncle Sam's other island is not Uncle Sam's (Being aware of the complicated relation between Cuba and USA, this is interesting this Emma Perez's own version of Chesterton's final conclusion about Shaw's John Bull's other island: "En resumen: la filosofía de La otra isla de John Bull es perfectamente eficaz y satisfactoria, excepto en este incurable defecto que la otra isla de John Bull no es de John Bull" -'In conclusion: the philosophy of John Bull's other island is perfectly efficient and satisfactory, but for the hopeless fault that John Bull's other island is not John Bull's'.). On the back cover (both pages) 'He defendido el derecho del distribuidor de la película "Martín Lutero" a exhibirla liberrimamente en Cuba ¿quiere esto decir que soy luterana? - 'I have defended the Martin Luther movie distributor's right to freely show it in Cuba. Does that mean that I am a Lutheran?' I think Emma is talking about this movie: 'Martin Luther (1953). That is a 1953 movie, so this note must have been written eight years after the date written in the cover.
