Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Maps, Some Art (illustrator). 1st. Shipping provided the only link in the colonial days between Australia and New Zealand and up until the 1900s sail remained largely dominant. Prominant in the trans-Tasman trade was the Auckland-based company, the Craig Line. This boook, one ofa number of nautical titles to appear under his authorship, is based on the activities of this company and its well-maintained, attractive barques and barquentines which were familiar in Australian and NZ ports and on the often stormy waters of the Tasman. The author was a seafarer and master mariner who, at the time the book was printed, was the first curator of the Wellington Harbour Board Maritime Museum. His research for this book, however, began during his seagoing days when time ashore was often spent interviewing old salts from the days of sail, or in libraries studying shipping records. This excellent book was the result and as well as carrying detailed records of the Craig Line and its ships, includes a graphic description of life at sea in those times with many.anecotes or incidents. To enhance the first-class text the author collected a magnificent selection of photographs showing the beautiful sailing ships of the time at their best and at work in seas calm and stormy. A treasure of recollections in word and picture of the latter days of commercial sail and a notable addition to NZ maritime history. First edition from Millwood Press of 1984. 164 pages including acknowledgements and bibliography, lavishly illustrated throughout with photos, some art and charts for Australian and NZ ports frequented by Craig's ships.Red hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+ with hint wear at spine extremities, text block with colour end-papers, is excellent, no inscriptions. VG+ DJ has colour paintings of Craig ships fore and aft,

Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos, Art, Plans, Document Reproductionsm, Etc (illustrator). 1st. The barque Pamir was one of the last of the great sailing ships that once dominated maritime trade. During her final years the ship operated as part of the New Zealand merchant fleet. At the end of July 1941 the ship arrived in Wellington, loaded with guano for a NZ client. However, during her voyage from the Seyschelles the Finniish owned Pamir had become an enemy vessel, Finland having joined the enemy in WWII. Having seized the Pamir as a "prize of war" the NZ Government decided the ship should be actively employed. and with with the co-operation of the Union Stream Ship Company, put the ship to work. Under USSCo management, with NZ officers and crew, Pamir sailed for San Francisco at the end of March 1942, completing the Pacific crossing in 58 days to discharge her cargo of wool and tallow. The return voyage took 73 days. her cargo bitumem and petroleum products. The barque was to make five more voyages to San Francisco and three to Vancouver, the last after WWII had ended. She later made an epic, year long, return voyage to London, from October 1947. In London arrangements were made to return the Pamir to her Finnish owners. This took place in Wellington in October 1949 and she sailed for South Australia flying the Finnish flag. In the early 1950s, now German owned, the Pamir was converted to operate as a trading/training ship, with accommodation for more that 50 cadets in addition to a full working crew. On June 1, 1957 she left Hamburg for South America in ballast with a complement of 86, 52 being cadets. At Buenos Aires she loaded almost 4000 tons of barley sailing for Hamburg on August 10. On September 21 Pamir encountered hurricane conditions in mid-Atlantic, capsized and sank. There were only.six survivors. The Pamir made her first trading voyage in 1905. Author Jack Chrurchouse has recorded the ship's NZ years in a masterful way, covering each of her trans-Pacific voyages in detail with. crew lists provided for each voyage. Other chapters deal briefly with the Pamir's early history, events leading to her seizure and the ship's later career and fate. The excellent narrative is enhanced, by a wonderful collection of illustrations. These ara largely b/w photos spread throughout the text, there is also a 16 page colour selection of several paintings of the ship, photos and document reproductions/maps. Also is a double page sail/rigging profile, three deck plans, hull form, hold and accommodation diagrams and deck plan as modified as a trading/trading ship. Colour toned end-papers show the ships's sail plan. These images combine vividly portray the power, grace and glory of the last of the line of these magnificent ships. First edition of 1978 from Millwood, Press, 284 pages including specifiications etc, bibliography and acknowledgements. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF with hint wear spine base, lower corners, tiny dent lower front edge. Colour art DJ NF with few tiny chips to edges. No inscriptions.
