Quarter-Cloth/Paper. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. {William Morrow and Company; New York; 1962; Quarter-Cloth/Paper; Near Fine/Good; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.} Dj somewhat soiled, worn along creases, darkened with age, chipped and torn at head and tail of spine, original price sticker on front; edges very slightly soiled. "The story of a very small town in the frantic and hilarious throes of a twentieth-century gold rush. Nothing much ever seed to happen in Bulinga. Matt Patch's return from jail would have provided enough excitement to sustain the entire population for the next seven years--but them GOLD was discovered in the Patches' back yard the morning after Matt's welcome-home party! The lode the Patches struck ran all through Emu Street--with outcroppings in some rather unlikely places such as the graveyard. Overnight Bulinga found itself very much on the map, aswarm with newspaper and television reporters, would-be prospectors, representatives of gold mine owners' associations, and even a Communist labor organizer and a bedraggles lady of easy virtue. But the bonanza also brought out man's baser instincts, and the burden of Bulinga's newfound problems fell on the unwilling shoulders of Chilla Patch, a young headmaster with a fatal aura of dependability and a magnetic attraction for people with troubles. The troubled included: Father Hourigan, who contemplated the moral problem of whether or not to dig up the graveyard; Miss Holborn, the dignified spinster schoolteacher who opened her house to 'fallen women'; and the whole raffish and lovable Patch clan. And, finally, there was Gina Da Vinci, the most beautiful girl in Bulinga and a self-confessed 'gold-digger' -- she was Chilla's most alluring problem. This is a rollicking, warmhearted novel with a large cast of colorful and endearing characters and a rich vein of humor." Listing updated 6-19-2006.
