Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 `1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with black lettering to spine and pictorial to cover in original pictorial jacket. Edited and revised by Fred Reinfeld and I A Horowitz. (Betts: 24-69) First edition. Original edition published as "Battles-royal of the Chessboard" London, Williams and Norgate, 1948. Spanning more than a century of chess play, from McDonnell v. Labourdonnais in 1834 to Matanovich v. Rossolimo in 1951, this remarkable collection comprises 50 of the greatest games ever played. Included are fascinating examples of the masters in action reacting when a combination goes wrong or when their opponents fight back. In these games neither player is content to be smothered by the brilliant imagination of the other, or to allow master technique to win a game by copybook methods; here is complicated, fighting chess. Few of the games will be old favorites, but many others will be less well known. All the immortals are here Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, and many more immersed in prodigious chess struggles that bring out their most courageous, resourceful, and tenacious play. Discover the greatness of such matches as Steinitz v. Lasker for the world championship in 1896; Capablanca v. Marshall in New York in 1918; Znosko-Borovsky v. Alekhine at Baden-Baden in 1925; Reshevsky v. Botvinnik at the AVRO Tournament in 1918, and many more. Any chess buff will enjoy and learn from these games, studded with brilliant combinations and astounding recoveries, which feature the greatest masters in some of their most inspired contests. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. xi+184 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with black lettering to spine and rook to cover. (Betts: 12-9) First edition. This book explains and illustrated the dynamic idea of chess. In the first part of the book the author reviews the Hypermodern Revolution as a reaction against the sterility of the Old Classicism and as a first step on the road to the New Dynamism. His judgments upon the leading personalities of that revolution, seen in the light of historical perspective, are both original and provocative. Did Capablanca's machine-like precision lead him into a dead end? Was Reti diverted from the dynamic principle by preoccupation with stresses in the opening. Did Nimzovich filch his theory of over-protection from Steinitz, and did his novel theory of Blockade in fact hamper his attainment of the highest honors. The second part of the book contains a wide selection of the most modern russian play, and the forces set in motion by the Hypermoderns are seen in full flower. the arrangement of this section by openings makes it a useful guide to modern dynamic play, and the juxtaposition of the ideas of the two periods helps to indicate the direction in which these ideas are moving, thus making them easier to understand. This is an essential book for all enthusiasts - club members and tournament players alike. Condition: Jacket with 1 1/2" x 1" loss to front head edge, price clipped, spine ends and corners chipped.
