Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Geoffrey Chaucer was born circa 1340 into a world that was very different from our modern world. Chaucer, working in the Chancery and fulfilling his diplomatic duties to the Crown, still found time to compose his immortal poetry. "The Canterbury Tales" will remain forever a magnificent monument to the genius of Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the world's greatest poets. ************************************ From the dust-jacket blurb: "This classic historical survey of Chaucer's life, times and works, first published in 1908, firmly places the poet in his paradoxical age. Paradoxical in that the Middle Ages exhibit both sordid , worldly characteristics, as well as a sublime piety. The configuration of these two extremes, the author argues, produced and nourished Chaucer's genius, and the result is nowhere more evident than in Chaucer's chief work, 'The Canterbury Tales'. This informal historical commentary on Chaucer's works offers a delightful survey of Chaucer's times which will fascinate the student and general reader alike." *************************************** TITLE : Chaucer and His England / AUTHOR : G. CONTENTS: Preface; Text; Notes; Index. SUMMARY: Medieval historian G. G. Coulton relinquished his own holy orders in 1885 but remained firmly engaged with Christianity. This 1919 collection of lectures is a radical and impassioned discussion of how Christianity must change to meet the needs of post-war society as soldiers return from the trenches. Drawing parallels between the lives of Jesus Christ and St Francis of Assisi, Coulton highlights how ambiguities in the surviving accounts of both men have diverted the original course of their ministry and, with it, the objectives and outlook of the church. The author also takes on the weaknesses in both Catholic and agnostic arguments and advocates a simplifying and democratisation of Christianity and the resolving of denominational differences. Included alongside the lectures is the author's comprehensive response to a number of questions raised by the original lecture series which provides a useful conclusion to the controversial anti-Catholic's plea for religious modernisation. 8vo. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. Hardcover. x, 133, [1] p.; 8 tipped-in color miniatures, 75 halftone illus. in text; 29.5 cm. ("Studio" special winter number) From the introduction by Gerald Crow: `While Dr. Coulton's study of Froissart and his Times ranges over the whole period of his life, the miniatures which accompany it are taken from a manuscript of the Fifteenth Century [B.M. Harley 4379-4380], which contains only the Fourth Book of the Chronicles. Of this manuscript a full account will be found in Kervyn de Lettenhove, "Oeuvres de Froissart," Vol. I (1873), pp. 323-325. The reader will find that it covers only the last ten years of the reign of Richard II. The entry of Queen Isabel into Paris was in 1389: the death of Richard II in 1399. The miniatures themselves stand at the beginning of the several chapters in the manuscript, and necessarily offer no connected story, divorced from their text. Only, towards the end, the tragedy of Richard II dominates the imagination, in a series whose effect is heightened by an occasional interpolation, culminating in the strangely moving scene of his burial--a series which, in its accumulated tragedy, seems almost comparable to those presentations of the Way of the Cross, with which the same miniaturist might, at another time, have occupied himself. Fascinating as these miniatures are, and vividly as they present to the mind the brilliant and tragic scenes of Froissart's narrative, they must not be taken as evidence for the costumes, armour or architecture of the Fourteenth Century. For the period at which they were painted, they are invaluable. But, in accordance with the customary practice, they are in "modern dress," the dress of the period in which they were made.' (p. 4 f.) 'Coulton was something of a controversialist and much of his writings were directed at Roman Catholic historians who he accused of having a flagrant disregard for historical accuracy. For Coulton historical truth, which he placed in contemporary sources, accurately sited, was the cornerstone of historical study. Something of a modernist, he saw it as his duty as a historian to pronounce against those who proffered what he believed was a less than accurate view of the past. Coulton, though, is remembered for more than this confrontational reputation. His extensive scholarship, which extended much further than many historical works at the turn of the century, is rightly seen as important. He also contributed to a widening of the range of medieval studies by his attention to social and economic issues. Furthermore Coulton was keen on extending his learning to a much wider audience than just those in academic circles, being a fine public speaker and writing clearly and lucidly' (Janus St. John's College Web site).
