Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 407 pages (complete). Ex-library (City of Johannesburg) copy with consequent debris, residue, annotations and marks. A decent copy. During the period of this volume of the remarkable Diaries of Countess Tolstoy, Leo, after 48 years of marriage, walked out on her. The entry for that day is heartbreaking and even now vivid and anguished: "Having learned of the flight from Sásha and from his letter, I threw myself in desperation into the pond. Sásha and Bulgákov pulled me out, alas! Afterwards for five days I took nothing into my mouth. On October 31st at half-past seven in the morning, I received a telegram from the editor of 'The Russian Word': "Leo Nikoláevich has fallen ill at Astápovo. Temperature 104"." My son Andréy and daughter Tánya and I went by special train from Túla to Astápovo. But they did not let me in to see Leo Nikoláevich, they held me back by force, closed the doors, and tore my heart to pieces." Rebound by the library. The boards are smart. Within, the contents are very confident. They are clean, clear, pleasing. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
