Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Sketch (illustrator). Second. The author arrived in New Zealand in 1864, a recenlly married young woman, and settled on an isolated North Canterbury sheep station, a far cry from her life in England. Her book conveys vivid images of settling into a new and strange environment, adapting and encountering all the difficulties faced by newcomers. However, it is a book filled with interesting aspects of this life, displaying her versatilty and good humour. Today it is an important informal history of those pioneering folk and their experiences. The book itself had an interesting past --- first published in Christchurch about 1896 for private circulation. However the print run was only 18 copies of a small format 352 page book and very few of these survived. As the introduction advises, nine or 10 copies were destroyed "as a rersult of objections by friends and neighbours of the author, people whose identities were thinly disguised under pseudonyms in her narrative." So, apart from the few copies still in existance, this 1976 first reprint was virtually a first edition, with aqdded introduction and notes, some of which identify those who were lightly concealed by the author. 250 pages, 13 b/w illustrations, mainly photos, also added for this edition. Brown hard covers VG+ with dark brown fabric spine strip with gilt titles, section 1.5cm deep neatly cut from top edge title page, text block otherwise excellent. Colour art DJ is VG with two short tape repaired tears, lower right front and top rear flap fold.
