A beautiful fine press production from Red Butte Press. Contains selected texts from Dale Morgan's crucial works "Utah: A Guide to the State" (1941, Federal Writers Project) and "Great Salt Lake" (1947, The American Lakes Series). This work also showcases five beautiful original woodcuts, each of which correspond directly to the Dale Morgan text selections. The woodblocks and prints for this book were done by Royden Card, one of Utah's most prominent printmakers. The text selections and their corresponding woodcuts cover the following Utah subjects/regions: Great Salt Lake, The High Uintas, Arches National Monument, Bryce National Park, and Zion National Park. "The text and blocks were printed on an 1846 Columbian Press at the University of Utah Marriott Library. The book was designed, handset, and printed by Day Christensen. The woodcuts were printed by the artist. The type is Bembo and the text paper is Barcham Green DeWint, and English handmade, printed damp. The handmade case paper, containing sagebrush from Utah, was produced especially for this edition by Twinrocker. The binding was done by Jean Tarascia. Printing was completed in the Spring of 1987." - From the colophon. "The state is immense and varied, almost beyond belief. Utah is many things at once: Utah is green-carpeted vales lying peacefully under the shadow of the Wasatch; Utah is a wide solitude of rolling dry valleys, with hills marching beyond hills to blue horizons; Utah is unearthly white desert; Utah is tall snow-covered mountains; Utah is blue lakes; Utah is canyon and plateau wonderfully fragrant with pines." - Dale L. Morgan. Limited edition (1 of 75 copies, of which this is #54).
