Spotted to the edges (primarily the head edge), the spine head moderately bumped at the joints, the lower board with a small patch of soiling, but towards Very Good overall in slightly lesser jacket, rubbed with a small chip at the spine head, and somewhat marked and shelfworn in general, the image a touch faded at the spine panel, but serviceable nonetheless.

George Granville Barker (1913-1991), poet, was "partly associated with the New Apocalyptics movement, which reacted against 1930s realism with surrealistic and mythical themes. However, his characteristically independent idiosyncrasies set him off as an individual in his own right" (n.b., quote from Wiki). This slim volume, by George Barker's friend of sixty years, David Gascoyne, "represents a celebration of [his] life and achievement" (n.b., from Introduction). Privately printed by Alan Anderson for Alan Clodd, noted publisher and book collector. ___DESCRIPTION: Turquoise wraps, a white paper label with black lettering on the front, yapped edges, frontispiece a reproduction of a photograph of George Barker (about 1940), facing p. 24 a reproduction of a photograph of David Gascoyne (about 1936); hand-set Bembo type on Teton paper, octavo size (9 11/16" by 6 1/2"), pagination: [1-4] 5-42 [2, blanks] [1, colophon]. With a short ANS by Stephen Stuart-Smith to the original owner, on a small slip of paper with the letterhead of the Enitharmon Press. ___CONDITION: Fine overall, the wraps clean and without wear, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; head and tail of the spine gently bumped, else fine. Wrappers. First Edition of this selection. Fine copy. Inscribed by Alan Clodd, the co-editor, to Arthur Uphill: "Arthur with best wishes 15.vii.96 Alan Clodd". In their preface (reprinted from Gascoyne's Collected Verse Translations, published in 1970) the editors record that they "have greatly benefited" from "the research of Arthur Uphill" In effect a revised edition of Collected Verse Translations (1970), with some work omitted and previously unpublished translations added, including from Hölderlin, Jouve and Mallarmé. The cloth bound issue was limited to 50 copies.Arthur Uphill (1931-2009) joined the staff of Bertram Rota Ltd. in 1955 and worked for the company as a cataloguer for nearly thirty-eight years. He brought to the company an extraordinary depth of knowledge of the expatriate authors living and working in Paris after 1918 and most especially of Gertrude Stein and Samuel Beckett.
