Rarísima versión española, contemporánea a la original, de uno de los productos "de pane lucrando" del entónces jóven periodista, bohemio impenitente y revolucionario a su manera, autor en 1850 de una "Histoire de la Révolution de Frévrier", la del 48 de Luis Felipe, de biografías de Nerval y Murger, de las modas, los lugares y los personajes y personajillos alrededor del Paris de sus dias, así como de un imprescindible (eróticamente) "Dictionnaire de la Langue Verte" y de los argots parisinos. Se trata aquí del personaje aventurero de Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) en sus años de marino mercante y revolucionario en Brasil y Uruguay, antes de su vuelta a Italia y del desembarco de "I Mille" en Sicilia de 1860. Probablemente se trata de un texto fusilado de las "Memorias" que Garibaldi redacto en Tánger entre 1849 y 1850.

Folkard, rue des Abbesses 47'.- // El diccionario de Delvau corrió una suerte singular. Su primera edición clandestina en Freetown [i.e Bruxelles], Imprimerie de la Bibliomaniac Society [i.e J. Gay], 1864, fue condenada en 1865 por el tribunal de la Seine a la destrucción total. Tras la muerte de Delvau, Jules Gay hizo imprimir una segunda edición (esta que ofrecemos), dicha de Neuchatel, siguiendo las correcciones y anotaciones que había dejado manuscritas el autor, con una tirada numerada de 500 ejemplares, siendo este el nº 155 de los impresos en pequeño papel inglés. La edición lleva un prefacio (atribuido a Jules Choux), la introducción de la primera edición (1864), el « Avant-propos » del 'Glossaire érotique' de Auguste Scheler (1861), bajo el seudonimo de Louis de Landes, y el prefacio del 'Recueil du Cosmopolite', de Moncrif y el duque de Aiguillon (1735). Las ediciones posteriores se hicieron tomando esta como base, pero en todas desaparece el primer párrafo del prefacio de esta edición de Neuchatel, que dice así: "Comme la liberté ne peut être accordée aux gens qui doivent rester esclaves, les livres 'libres' sont por nous des livres défendus. Jamais il ne s'en montre dans la librairie, et il n'en traíne même jamais aucun dans nos maisons ; aussi celui que nous reimprimonsest-il un livre qui doit se dissimuler. Personne, pas même rois, empereurs, pape, n'est en droit de le lire en public.Il ne doit être consulté que dans le particulier; le reste du temps, il faut le fourrer dans une poche profonde, ou mieux dans le fond d'une bibliotheque fermé a clef." En muchas ocasiones se atribuye a la edición dicha de Bâle, Schmidt, la fecha de 1864, siendo en realidad posterior. Ignoramos si los 300 ejemplares en pequeño papel inglés de esta segunda edición deberían llevar el frontispicio que sí aparece en los 100 ejemplares impresos en gran velín inglés y en los 100 en papel de Holanda.
