Wir besitzen sozusagen eine Kompetenz, literarische Werke oder Filme als fiktional zu verstehen. Wird Fiktionalität nun bezüglich der Semantik des Begriffes und dessen Entstehung hinterfragt, stößt man auf eine Vielzahl von philosophischen und literaturwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten, welche versuchen, dieses durchaus nicht unproblematische Phänomen der Fiktionalität zu erhellen. Seinen etymologischen Ursprung hat der Begriff im lateinischen Verb 'fingere', welches 'bilden', 'formen', 'ersinnen' bzw. 'erdichten' bedeutet, weiterhin in dem Substantiv 'fictum', das mit 'Erdichtung', 'Trug' sowie mit 'Lüge' übersetzt wird. Fiktionalität könnte somit über seinen fehlenden Wirklichkeitsbezug definiert werden, jedoch bringt eine solche Betrachtungsweise Probleme mit sich. Zunächst wird ein oppositionelles Verhältnis zwischen Fiktion und Wirklichkeit deutlich, wobei letztere über die Widerspiegelung der Realität charakterisiert wird. Die gängige Definition bestimmt diese Opposition zum Faktischen. Wenn aber das eine dem Bereich der Realität unterliegt, muss das andere irreal sein. Von dem konstruktivistischen Ansatz abgesehen, dass Realität wie sie ist nicht erfassbar für den menschlichen Geist sein kann, stellt sich dennoch die Frage, wie etwas existieren kann, das keinen Wirklichkeitsbezug hat. Daraus ergibt sich, neben dem stummen Wissen um Einigung bezüglich der kategorialen Semantik der Begriffe, dass Fiktion immer an die Wirklichkeit gebunden ist, allein schon durch ihre gedanklichen Konstrukte, die von Realem inspiriert sind, und durch Kommunikationsinstrumente wie die Sprache. Dies führt zu der Erkenntnis, dass Fiktion und Faktisches in einem sich bedingenden Mischungsverhältnis stehen und somit schwerlich in wahr oder falsch oppositionell getrennt werden können. In der Literaturwissenschaft wird die Fiktion zunächst als charakterisierendes Element oder Stilmittel literarischer Werke angesehen, dessen konstruiertes Geschehen dargestellt wird, als ob es wirklich wäre - und ist doch Erfundenes, die Wirklichkeit widerspiegelnd oder interpretierend und somit an sie gebunden.

Bislang gibt es keinen vollständigen Forschungsbericht bezüglich einer Geschichte des Dokumentarfilms und keine einheitliche Gattungsbeschreibung aufgrund kontroverser Meinungen, '[.] mit welchen Mitteln die dokumentarische Methode arbeitet und welche Tabus dabei nicht verletzt werden dürfen.' (Hattendorf 1999, S.10) Ausgangspunkt der Differenzen sind die Diskussionen um Realität, Wirklichkeit bzw. Authentizität, die als das Hauptmerkmal eines Dokumentarfilms erkannt wurden und seit Kracauer, welcher die Hauptaufgabe eines Dokumentarfilmers in der Registrierung und Wiedergabe der äußeren Wirklichkeit sah, als Fokus der Definition schlechthin galt. (Hattendorf 1999, S.68) Die Problematik der Begriffe 'Realität' und 'Wirklichkeit' bezüglich des Dokumentarfilms bilden den Kernpunkt der nachstehenden Ausführungen. Folgen wird ein kurzer Einblick in den Lösungsvorschlag Hattendorfs bezüglich der Gattungsbestimmung des hier zu behandelnden Gegenstands.

(Faulstich 2002, S.14) Jedoch ist in den letzten Jahren eine Trendwende zu beobachten, so dass im Bereich der Medienpsychologie alte Thesen und Methoden wieder aufgegriffen, auf ihre Haltbarkeit geprüft, eventuell erweitert und neue Thesen und Methoden entwickelt werden (vgl.: Mangold; Vorderer; Bente 2004. Lehrbuch der Medienpsychologie.). Die Diskussionen bezüglich des Prozesses der Identifikation entfernen sich von der Psychoanalyse und werden psychologischer. Dennoch müssen in der vorliegenden Arbeit, welche den medienpsychologischen Diskurs aufgreifen soll, zunächst die psychoanalytischen Thesen Freuds und Lacans betrachtet werden, da diese die Basis filmwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen zu dem Mechanismus der Identifikation bilden. Zuvor wird eine kurze Erklärung des hier zu behandelnden Gegenstands gegeben, um dann dessen Verwendung in den Geisteswissenschaften, insbesondere in der Medienwissenschaft darzulegen. Der Ursprung des Wortes liegt im Lateinischen 'legere' und dessen abgeleiteten Gerundiv 'legenda', was 'das zu Lesende' bedeutet.Bei darauf folgenden Forschungen stößt man im religiösen und im literarischen Bereich unmittelbar auf die Heiligenlegenden der katholischen Kirche. Diese christlich katholische Form der Legende ist die Darstellung der Lebensgeschichte oder die Beschreibung einiger Passagen aus dem Leben eines Heiligen. Im weitesten Sinne ist theologisch dabei von Bedeutung, dass die Erzählung von einer von Gott begnadete Person handelt, die als historisch bezeugt gilt. Wegen dieses Anspruchs an Authentizität soll die Heiligenlegende den Leser bzw. Hörer zu einem gottgefälligen Leben anregen. Diese Funktionalität wird im nächsten Kapitel ausführlicher analysiert, da diese Form der Legende primär den Fokus dieser Arbeit bildet. Im ersten Teil gehe ich im Detail auf die Heiligenlegende ein, um diese zweiten Teil die herausgefilterten Merkmale auf Vladimir Nabokovs Roman Pnin zu beziehen. Dabei wird sich zeigen, dass Pnin eine Figur mit den Eigenschaften eines Heiligen ist und der Roman durchaus als Legende des 20. Jahrhunderts betrachtet werden kann.
