[3] - 46 pp. Text double-column. 8vo. 9" x 5-5/8" As is the case with most of the Christmas stories, the work actually a collaborative effort, though marketed under Dickens' very salable name:Â Chapters I & VII by Dickens (per VanderPoel, & confirmed by Oppenlander);Â Chapter II by Elizabeth Gaskell (states Oppenlander, even though Gaskell "swore" not to write for ATYR);Â Chapter III by Andrew Halliday;Â Chapter IV by Edmund Yates;Â Chapter V by Amelia Edwards;Â & Chapter VI by Charles A. Collins (Dickens' son-in-law & the individual initially chosen to illustrate Drood). General soiling to wrappers, with small piece missing from lower left of front panel [no text affected]. Bookseller blindstamp to front wrapper. Tide line to rear wrapper. Withal, a VG copy of an uncommon edition. Printed white wrappers. Adverts to rear wrapper (recto & verso) 1st US editiion (Brussel EAST TO WEST, p. 81; Gimbel B283; Oppenlander ATYR Contributer List, p. 136; VanderPoel B450, for the 1864 edition). Not in Edgar & Vail.

First Edition
Wrappers. Condition: Very good +. First Edition, First Printing. A Very Good + or better copy of the First American Edition of this Dickens Christmas Number, being the fifth of his nine Christmas numbers (published from 1859-1867) in his famed periodical ["All The Year Round"], with Dickens having written only the first and last of the seven chapters comprising this tale. The second chapter was written by Elizabeth Gaskell, the third by Andrew Halliday, the fourth by Edmund Yates, the fifth by Amelia Edwards, and the sixth by Charles Dickens' son-in-law Charles A. Collins. This wrappered publication is in Very Good + or better condition with some soiling to the wrappers and only some slight loss to each cover's leading corner and to the lower spine, as well as a pencil note to the front wrapper's top edge. The rear wrapper's upper left corner shows some wrinkling. The inside rear wrapper is dated 1863 and hosts Harper's List of New Books. Copies of this publication are rather uncommon to the market and are considerably scarcer than is the first English edition; an all-together rather nice copy of this rather uncommon Dickens work.
