First edition.Mr. Dooley was the fictional creation of American humorist Finley Peter Dunne [1867-1936]. In Dunne's nationally syndicated sketches, Mr. Dooley expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub. His eloquent verbiage and thick accent were those of an Irish immigrant from County Roscommon. Dunne's sly humor and political acumen won the support of President Theodoe Roosevelt and his sketches were so popular and reflected public opinion so accurately that they were read each week at White House cabinet meetings.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. First edition (date on copyright page) 12mo with 221pages. Mr. Dooley was a pseudoymn of Amerian Humorist Finley Peter Dunne. He published Mr. Dooley in Peace and War, a collection of his nationally syndicated Mr. Dooley sketches, in 1898. The fictional Mr. Dooley expounded upon political and social issues of the day from his South Side Chicago Irish pub and he spoke with the thick verbiage and accent of an Irish immigrant. Dunne's sly humor and political acumen won the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, a frequent target of Mr. Dooley's barbs. Indeed Dunne's sketches became so popular and such a litmus test of public opinion that they were read each week at White House cabinet meetings. The book is in good condition with two different previous ownership signatures. One on front pastedown and another at bottom of title page. The dust jacket is in fair condition, torn at spine, with two closed tears and 1"by 1" piece missing from top of front panel. One 1 1/4" by 1" piece missing from top of spine. Two small 1/4" pieces missing from spine. Price on spine is $1.35 net. Extremely rare in dust jacket. Size: 12mo. Hardcover.
