Hardcover. Condition: USED_GOOD. No Jacket. Dagmar Wilson (illustrator). 1st Edition. Berlitz Italian for Children: The Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood, Edited by the Staff of The Berlitz Schools of Languages, Under the Direction of Robert Strumpen-Darrie and Charles F. Berlitz, Illustrations by Dagmar Wilson, was published by Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, in 1959. This 54-year-old, 7" X 8 3/4", 58-page, thought-to-be First (US, at least) Edition offering is an ex-library, rebound copy in G condition. In overall crisp/firm physical shape, there are some of the standard library markings in evidence. There is a 4 3/4"-long, diagonal crease near the bottom-outer corner of page 1, and a roughly 2 1/2"-long, horizontal tear(which has been previously clear-taped) from the outer edge inward on the middle-third portion of page 2/3. Some extremely rare, light foxing is observed on 2-3 random pages of text. From Introduction, "When a child hears or reads a nursery tale in Italian that he already knows in English, he has made an effortless step toward learning Italian. Parents and teachers need not themselves know Italian to make use of this book. Through pictures, English text under simple Italian, and phonetic pronunciation, the story becomes easily understandable to all. Nursery tales in [this offering] are not simply the familiar stories retold in Italian. They are much more. The text has been selected according to Berlitz language-teaching principles so that the young reader may learn a useful and basic Italian vocabulary, presented in a recurring frequency pattern that will fix the words in his mind as he follows the story. The question-and-answer method limits the narrative to the present tense and affords a way of having the children subsequently use the book themselves, playing different roles for conversational practice. .The selected vocabulary in these books, especially designed for holding a child's interest, will also serve to prepare him for his later, more detailed, study of Italian. The retention of these phrases at an early age, expressed in terms familiar to him, bridges the foreign language gap, so that when he meets Italian as a formal subject in school, it is not in the guise of a bogey, but as a fondly remembered childhood playmate." As highlighted above, the two kids' stories featured are "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and "Little Red Riding Hood". OF SPECIAL NOTE: Gracing every other page, basically half in black and white and the other half in rich, vivid colors, are the charming, beautifully-rendered Drawings of Dagmar Wilson, which, of course, more than bring the characters from both tales to life for readers of all ages. Thanks!!.
