Couple of small pieces of D/J. missing from top edge. Foxing to D/J. Sunned spine to D/J. 'In 1843 Bradley Thomas Batsford lately apprentice to Bickers, of Leicester Square, opened a little secondhand bookshop in High Holborn. In 1943 B. T. Batsford, Limited, of 15, North Audley Street, publish this record of the 'Batsford Century'. The book is meant for a 'limited world.the world of printers, booksellers, bookbinders and authors who ply their trade in association with the Batsford name'. But a very much wider world than that must be urged to see this finely got-up and illustrated record, and still more to read its high-hearted, workaday, counter-revolutionary pages.'This untidy, genial, composite, effective, very English book about a business to which all these adjectives seem to apply.is a historical sketch of the writing and publishing of English books about archtecture and other arts and crafts; it is a fond look backward over old London, old ways, old buildings and old characters; it is a racy account of men long dead and of men now living who had a passion for this Batsford job and no need to tone down their personalities while they threw themselves into it. Much of the book is written by Mr. Harry Batsford himself. Other members of the firm write their pieces, and Mr. Hector Bolitho gathers them up and fits them discreetly into an accommodating structure. Illustrated. 148 pp. Hand cut pages. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
