Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Frank Brangwyn (illustrator). A smart copy of Frank Brangwyn's illustrated edition of Fitzgerald's translation of Omar Khayyam's 'Rubaiyat'. Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician and astronomer, born in the 2nd Century. He gained great popularity for his poetry after the translation of Edward Fitzgerald. However, Fitzgerald's translations are fairly loose, with some considering that his translation of 'Rubaiyat' could be considered as Fitzgerald's own original poetry that are only loosely based on Khayyam's quatrains. This, a reissue of the 1906 edition illustrated by Frank Brangwyn, features four colour plates, and further decorative designs by Brangwyn, the prominent Welsh artist and watercolourist. Collated, complete. With a former owner's inscription, dated 1912, to the verso of the front free endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with minor discolouration to back strip and board perimeters. Splits to cloth at front and rear joints, with boards holding firm. Hinges lightly strained. Inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good. book.
