Aus diesem Anlass widmet die Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek in Zusammenarbeit mit der Murnau-Stiftung dem Film eine Sonderausstellung, zu der das Buch "Fritz Langs Metropolis" erscheint. Das Buch versammelt im Textteil Beiträge zur Geschichte und Bedeutung des Films, stellt die komplizierte und verwirrende Geschichte seiner vielen Fassungen und Kürzungen vor, erläutert die Bedeutung der originalen Filmmusik für die neue Rekonstruktion und analysiert, wie die neuen Szenen die Erzählstruktur des Films entscheidend verändert haben. Wie kam es überhaupt dazu, dass die längste Fassung so lange unbekannt geblieben ist und erst jetzt wieder auftauchte, wie verlief die erste Vorführung dieser Fassung in Berlin? Auch dazu bietet das Buch Antworten. Für den Bildteil wählten die Herausgeber aus rund 1000 Fotos die schönsten, aussagekräftigsten und gelegentlich auch skurrilsten Aufnahmen aus. Original-Szenen- und -Kostümentwürfe, das Original- Drehbuch, Requisiten und Zeugnisse von Mitarbeitern blättern in opulenter Ausstattung das ganze Spektrum dieser spektakulären Produktion aus. Unter anderem konnten die Herausgeber auf über 800 Fotos aus der persönlichen Sammlung von Fritz Lang aus der Cinémathèque Française zurückgreifen.
