First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. [472pp coated stock, with frontis guard]: [ii], xxx, 440; gilt-decorated ribbed evergreen cloth, jacket (unpriced & unclipped); 240 x 164 x 36 mm. First edition of this pioneering treasure, transcribed at Wolford Lodge, Devon, under the direction of John Ross Robertson (who also engaged artists to illustrate every edifice connected with the Simcoes, as well as Lady Simcoe's drawings & maps); a momentous & monumental extra-illustrated & annotated extravaganza. With the editor's Preface dated August 1911 & extensive biographical essay. The Canadian portion of the Diary extends from 11 November 1791 through 16 October 1796, with the Simcoes' arrival in Upper Canada, delayed by the season until late June 1792. A notoriously heavy tome, the present copy is exceptional in preserving hinges & joints. The very rare jacket is only worn at spine ends & tips, though there is a 6cm separation along the upper joint mid-spine. A historic undertaking in surpassing condition.
