Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition 4th Printing. Corners, Spine Bumped; Light Shelf Rub to Boards; Spine Slightly Cocked; Edges Lightly Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. CONTENTS: Chapter 1. The Algebra of Sets; Chapter 2. Arrangements and Subsets; Chapter 3. Mathematical Induction; Chapter 4. The Binomial Theorem; Chapter 5. Probability; Chapter 6. Polar Co-ordinates; Chapter 7. Complex Numbers; Chapter 8. An Introduction to Algebraic Systems; Tables; Answers; Index. EXCERPT: PREFACE - In this text the authors have attempted to introduce a judicious blending of the set theoretical approach and the more traditional approach to the various topics. The set theoretical approach can be very useful in demonstrating relationships between apparently unrelated topics and, from this point of view, is a powerful mathematical tool. However, overindulgence in set theory simply for the sake of using sets may often cause basically simple ideas to appear much more complicated than they actually are. Study of Chapters 6, 7, and 8, may usefully be delayed until the authors companion volume entitled Vectors and Matrices has been studied. This is not essential since these chapters are complete in themselves, but a familiarity with Vectors and Matrices may enable the student to study these chapters more quickly. Definitions and key points in the various chapters have been printed in red. In addition some problems in certain exercises have been numbered in red. These tend to be more difficult than the other problems and might be omitted on a first reading . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Vectors; Chapter 2. Algebraic Vectors; Chapter 3. Length and Inner Product; Chapter 4. Lines in Two- and Three-Space; Chapter 5. Planes; Chapter 6. Systems of Linear Equations; Chapter 7. Matrices and Linear Transformations; Chapter 8. Matrix Multiplication; Answers; Index. EXCERPT: PREFACE - In this text the student is led from a study of physical vectors, in particular of their geometric representatives, to a study of algebraic vectors which provides the student with a precise account of this branch of mathematics and an introduction to the abstract ideas of vector spaces. This work is then applied mainly to the development of a number of ideas in plane co-ordinate geometry (many of which are already familiar to the student) and the extension of these ideas to three-dimensional geometry. Discussions of systems of linear equations, their solution or lack of a solution, form a significant part of the work in this text. These discussions lead naturally to and culminate in an introduction to the study of matrices . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
