Hardbound 8vo (about 8.5 inches tall) 283 pages. Bibliography, index. Description: Includes a few black and white photo illustrations. In the author's foreword, Ellis Lucia explains that he came to know Amos Alonzo Stagg through Stagg's younger son who coached at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where Lucia was newspapering. Lucia recalls that it became routine for Alonzo and Stella Stagg to journey north to visit their son and grandchildren, the visits often timed to coincide with spring training, so that he might give his son an unofficial hand. Stagg had a unique thing going for a few years as he spent the fall seasons assisting his other son at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, where they were both under contract. Section headings are: Days of the Flying Wedges (Stagg's days at Phillips-Exeter and Yale); 'Neath the Old Maroon (the Chicago Maroons champion teams of 1905 and 1913); and A Brand New Ball Game, with an Epilogue: The Grand Old Man. BINDING/CONDITION: orange cloth; much handling soil, badly faded at the spine; bookseller's ink stamp on the front endpaper; Fair condition; no dust jacket.
