The project was never filmed, in part (as Asimov notes in his introduction, actually written in 1987 for the three-part serialization in "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine") because "the picture would have cost some $30 million to make," which was considered prohibitive, and in part because "The producers wanted Harlan to make the robots 'cute,' like R2-D2, and they also wanted him to make Susan Calvin young and pretty like Princess Leia." A 2004 Will Smith cop-detective vehicle about a robot rebellion used the title, though screen credits admitted the filmed "I, Robot" was merely "suggested" by Asimov's short story collection, while also using elements of his "Caves of Steel."
