Condition: Very Good. Albumen Stereograph Card (7" x 4"). An unidentified portrait of Ralph Waldo Emerson seated next to a table. The portrait was taken by American photographer J.W. Black and first issued by him in the mid-1850s as an albumen carte de visite. The top edge is modestly toned, faint foxing on verso, very good. J.W. Black is noted for his experimentation and innovation, including an aerial view of Boston taken from a tethered balloon in 1860, and for his portraits of other prominent figures, including John Brown (1859) and Walt Whitman (1860). A scarce early stereograph card of Black's portrait of Emerson.
