Book
Soft cover. Condition: New. Ward, Lynd (illustrator). New condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Introduction by Gary D. Schmidt. Illustrated by Lynd Ward with black-and-white drawings. Newbery Medal winner "The year is 1773; the scene is Boston. Johnny Tremain is fourteen and apprenticed to a silversmith. He is gifted and knows it. He is gay and clever and lords it over the other apprentices until the tragic day when a crucible of molten silver breaks and Johnny's right hand is so burned as to be useless. After a period of despair and humiliation, Johnny becomes a dispatch rider for the Committee of Public Safety, a job that brings him in touch with Otis, Hancock, John and Samuel Adams, and other Boston patriots, and with all the exciting currents and undercurrents that were to lead to the Tea Party and the Battle of Lexington. There, on the battlefield, he learns from Dr. Warren that his maimed hand can be cured so that he can use a musket and some day return to his trade. .In Johnny Tremain, a John Newbery Award Winner, [Esther Forbes] has taken one corner of the canvas, enlarged and dramatized it, and made it into a living background for a novel which will have as long a life as its predecessor (Paul Revere and the World He Lived In). To read "Johnny Tremain' is to lie through two dramatic years of our country's history, and to see these great events from a new angle through the shrewd eyes of an observant boy. Lynd Ward has sharpened the drama of the story by adding illustrations to this Newbery Edition.".

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Ward, Lynd (illustrator). Fine unread condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes Dedication and About the Author. Illustrated with black-and-white drawings by Lynd Ward. A small less than a pencil eraser size mark at the upper page edge and light bit of rubbing at the upper front cover edge (see photographs). All pages are in fine condition and the spine is exceedingly tight and square with no creasing whatsoever. "Johnny Tremain, a young apprentice silversmith, is caught up in the danger and excitement of Boston in the 1770s, just before the Revolutionary War. Johnny can't help being swept along by the powerful currents that will lead to the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Lexington. But even more gripping than living through the drama of Revolutionary Boston is the important discovery Johnny makes about his own life." - from the rear outer cover.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Lynd Ward (illustrator). Reprint. Having won a Pulitzer Prize in 1943, Esther Forbes went on to win a Newbery Medal in 1944 for this young adult novel set in Boston just prior to the American Revolution, and during its beginning. Illustrated with a color frontispiece, and a dozen full page drawings by Lynd Ward which were added to these later printings after the book was awarded the Newbery Medal. This is a very good copy indeed of an undated twenty-third printing. There is a name on the front pastedown, but otherwise it is in excellent shape. The dust jacket is about very good, with the Newbery sticker on front panel, slightly worn and nicked edges, slightly faded on spine panel and with a couple of small worn areas on rear panel. Looks nice and presentable behind the acetate.
