Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Rarely seen in the UK, Dame Edna's Coffee Table Book has a flavour that's very difficult to describe. In that respect it's rather like one of the Australasian recipes featured within, for example Tasmanian Tuna Fish with Curry and Almonds. "Make milk into white sauce with flour and 1/2 butter in the traditional Tasmanian manner. Add other flavourings and cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Then plonk in the tuna." And so on. There's Barry Humphries' mischief and brio in those phrases "the traditional Tasmanian manner" and "then plonk in the tuna", plonk being a word hardly ever seen in recipes, although when you think about how most of us actually cook there is no reason why it should not be. The book starts with commendations from "some of Edna's famous friends", firstly the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Patrick White, who is pictured looking serious in a big woolly pullover and was indeed a friend of Barry Humphries. White's entry ends: "whether beating the daylights into a fluffy sponge or taking a chisel to a plastic doily, whether jollying the timorous male or popping a reluctant blackhead, let Dame Edna be your guide." The "reluctant blackhead" catches the eye, but check out too the reworked cliche: not beating the living daylights out of something, but beating the daylights into a fluffy sponge. So when one photo of Dame Edna under a sign proclaims "LOWBROW ENTERTAINMENT COMES TO THE WEST END AT LAST ! ! !" it's true but not entirely true. There's all sorts of low humour in here, a random flick presents Norm's Brandied Ginger Balls, but it's clever with it. The book itself is still tightly bound and the pages are clean, except for about two thirds of the way up the outer edge of pages 43 to 46, where it looks as if a reader has held part of the edge of these pages with a wet thumb, so there's a little bit of browning. If you look very closely indeed, you can also see where a couple of pages had small folds in the top corner. The front and back covers show signs of shelfwear and handling along the edges, at the corners, and up and down the spine, but nothing very significant for a book of this age and kind. Joan Bakewell, another one of Edna's famous friends, is quoted as saying: "The experience of working with Dame Edna Everage is one that, however hard I try, I can never forget." The same could be said of reading this tremendously lively book.
