Dall'agosto 1994 al settembre del 1995, si sono accumulati molti avvenimenti, con un ritmo veloce e confuso, dando a questa raccolta un carattere di testimonianza dello sviluppo stesso della crisi. Non deve trarre in inganno l'apparente semplicità delle parole e dei concetti espressi con tono lieve e talvolta giocoso: dietro di ciò si muove una realtà articolata e dura che prende forza e forma dalla disperazione quotidiana. Dietro di ciò c'è la realtà di un popolo che ha imparato a proprie spese a non aspettarsi nulla di buono dal governo, dai partiti e dalla politica. Dietro di ciò c'è un popolo che vorrebbe vivere in maniera dignitosa, con meno povertà, con più salute, con meno fame. E per vivere è disposto a morire, per parlare è costretto ad armarsi, per rendersi visibile deve nascondere il proprio volto. Contiene glossario.

Preceduti da un illuminante saggio di Antonio García de León, sono qui raccolti i comunicati che vanno dal primo giorno dell'insurrezione (1° gennaio 1994) fino all'8 di agosto dello stesso anno (data d'inizio della Convenzione Nazionale Democratica). La visione che scaturisce dalla lettura del messaggio complessivo, trasmette un senso tragico della vita (fatta di miserie e privazioni), e soprattutto della morte (unica compagna di viaggio sempre presente anche ai più giovani) in un discorso che si alterna tra il politico e il poetico, e che sovente sfocia in garbata ironia. Nello stesso tempo, dalle parole di Marcos e degli altri membri dell'EZLN, viene fuori con tutta la sua "violenza" la lucida e rigida denuncia verso una società che tritura tutto e tutti per seguire il solo interesse economico, e verso un malgoverno che in Messico ha strangolato, da sempre, le aspirazioni di giustizia e di libertà per i più poveri e deboli.
