Fanning sailed the South Seas for 25 years, traveling the Pacific, around the world, China, Australia, South Georgia, Fiji, the Marquesas, etc. This work was first pub. in 1833 before this 1924 reprint edition from the Marine Research Society. On the rear e.p.are marks indicating the removal of a pocket or label o/w there are NO library markings inside or out. Attractive blue cloth bound hard cover book in v.g. or better cond. No d/w.

All plates are resent and intact. Fanning (1769-1841) was an American explorer and sea captain known as the "Pathfinder of the Pacific." Foxing is beginning to appear on the edges of the pages. Pages are clean and complete. Binding is tight.

Hill p. 101, describing the first edition of 1833, which had just 5 plates: Captain Fanning of Stonington, Connecticut, sailed for the South Seas in 1792, on a voyage for sealskins, and during the next 25 years made voyages to the Pacific and around the world, visiting Australia, the desolate lands of South Georgia, and the islanders of Fiji, Tonga and the Marquesas. He discovered several islands, including one that still bears his name, lying 1200 miles south of Honolulu. Included is an account of the first American naval exploring expedition to the southern hemisphere, 1829-30, sponsored by the U. S. government and commanded by Benjamin Pendleton."
