Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book educates children about the significance of food conservation during World War 1. The book is a product of the author's close association with U.S. wartime food administration departments. At its heart is the belief that children in schools can make a valuable contribution to the war effort through awareness and participation in food saving initiatives. It is argued that every child in the US, even the 'dullest pupil in the poorest schoolroom,' had a keen interest in the war and could be stimulated to a sense of personal responsibility to conserve food. The book teaches children basic arithmetic and calculations by using real-time examples of food scarcity, waste and the need for effective rationing. It encourages children to discuss these issues at home with their parents, sharing what they learn at school with their communities. The author is optimistic that these small yet consistent changes in attitudes toward food could aid the war effort. Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "The United States Food Administration (19171920) was an independent Federal agency that controlled the production, distribution and conservation of food in the U. S. During the nation's participation in World War I. It was established to prevent monopolies and hoarding, and to maintain government control of foods through voluntary agreements and licensing. The agency was established by Executive Order 2679-A of August 10, 1917, pursuant to the Food and Fuel Control Act, and was abolished by Executive Order 3320 on August 21, 1920. Herbert Hoover was appointed to serve as Food Administrator. One of the agency's important tasks was the stabilization of the price of wheat on the U. S. Market. Concepts such as "meatless Mondays" and "wheatless Wednesdays" were also implemented to help ration food, so that the government could prioritize the war effort. " (from Wikipedia).
