Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-31 [32], frontispiece (photographic portrait of Farnsworth), tan wrappers printed in black, stapled. Second edition. An interesting association copy, signed on page 3 by Farnsworth and presented to member number 716, John Thomas Diebold. Diebold (1926-2005), American businessman, "was a pioneer in the field of automation, founding The Diebold Group, Inc. to advise corporations around the world as well as governments in the U.S and abroad in the potential of information technology. Diebold's first book, AUTOMATION: THE ADVENT OF THE AUTOMATIC FACTORY, based on his studies at the Harvard Business School, was published by Van Nostrand in 1952. Owing to independent research and ever-persistent curiosity about the whole field of technology, he originated many of the concepts of data processing and utilization that are accepted today in both automation and management. This book was reissued unchanged on its 30th anniversary as a 'management classic' by the American Management Association. He is credited with coining the word automation in its present meaning, and had much to do with introducing it to general usage." - Wikipedia. In 1942 American businessman Robert Lee Farnsworth (1909-1998) founded "the U.S. Rocket Society, not to be confused with the American Rocket Society. The stated aim of the U.S. Rocket Society was the conquest of the Moon in the name of the United States toward the establishment of an interplanetary empire. Contains a brief bibliography on rocketry and an index to articles contained in ASTRONAUTICS (the official organ of the American Rocket Society) for the years 1930-1940." - Ciancone 68. Corners chipped, stain at top spine edge with faint penetration on first and last two leaves, partial split along spine fold of wrappers, a good copy. Scarce. (#163920).
