Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket As Issued. Second Edition. 320 Pages Indexed. Boards are blue checed cloth. Book is tight and has been stored well. All of the chapter tabs are present and the only defect found to this book is a few of the tabs are lightly curved up. Otherwise a flawless interior with no fading or marks of any sort. This is the 1949 Revised and Updated Second Edition of the 1937 First Edtion Copyright. The print runs were 57,236 for the 1st Edition and 50,000 copies of the 1949 2nd Edition. Earlier The Household Searchlight Recipe Book was published in 1931 and over two million copies were sold. This company was one of the earliest efforts to provide a homemaking testing laboratory. The laboratory was an actual home in which people lived and it provided a buying guide and recipe testing program. The demand for the 1931 recipe book made the 1937 Homemaking Guide possible. World War 2 caused the closing of the laboratory in April of 1942. By 1949 the revised and update version was published and it includes etiquette, weddings, menus, and cooking for large groups. A section is devoted to exercise and good looks, the sickroom, physical care of the baby and mental health of the child. Other chapters discuss building a home, care of the lawn, finishing floors, woodwork and walls, furnishings, buying fabrics, stain removal, dyeing, equipment, and extermination of pests. In his Foreword Nelson Crawford, the editor-in-chief, states that the reason all of these things were included is the conviction of Household that the American family does not live by bread alone; that beauty, dignity, emotional adjustment within the family, and wholesome interest in community affairs are integral ingredients of a satisfying home life. It might be noted that Household Publishing with its laboratory testing facility predated Consumers Union that began as a service to the Union Community and later evolved into Consumers Reports.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. A collection of 230 loose gelatin silver photographs measuring between 4" x 5" and 8" x 10", with some captions on the verso. All items are near fine with some curling. An archive of images by New York photographer Helen T. Ferrell captured in the 1930s. She specialized in nature and animal photography and examples of this are seen throughout with western landscapes, birds flying and feeding, household pets of all kinds, and occasionally people in New York, but also California, Florida, and Chicago, interacting with their pets and wildlife. Many of the photos have Farrell's stamp and captions on the back, either handwritten directly on the photo or typed on a label; there are also a few scattered examples of the Ameri-Candid photo agency copyright stamp. One of Farrell's most famous photos is of a terrier barking at a tree which was featured as the cover photograph for the April 5, 1937 issue of *LIFE* magazine. Two different size copies of the image are included here along with a copy of the magazine. While Ferrell's focus was largely animals and landscapes included are more than a dozen striking images of ordinary people that she saw during her travels. Among them are photos of workers in the field baling hay and plowing fields, people at a town square (possibly in Mexico) buying and selling baked good and drinks, a young African-American man reading the newspaper while seated in a horse-drawn wagon, and a shot of young children sneaking a peek under a circus tent. An extensive collection of photography by a female artist in the 1930s.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 272 pp. ; profusely illustrated with artwork, drawings, and photographs ; red decorative cloth, no dustjacket ; ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PSYCHIC OCCURENCES is preserved in this yearbook. A member of the graduating January class of 1933, GENEVA ABBOTT PATTERSON, (1916-2011) was asked at age 16 to imagine the city of St. Louis in the future, and she amazingly created a watercolor depicting the St. Louis cityscape and INCLUDED THE ST. LOUIS GATEWAY ARCH 15 YEARS BEFORE IT BECAME A CONCEPT IN THE MIND OF ITS DESIGNER, EERO SAARINEN IN 1947! The Gateway Arch was not completed until 1963. ; She added the following prophetic text spoken by Ulysses's wife Penelope from line 24 of Tennyson's Ulysses (1842): "Yet all experience is an Arch wherethro' gleams that untravell'd world, whose margin fades for ever, and for ever when I move" ; Geneva Abbott furthered her art studies at the Hadley Vocational School and became a member of the St. Louis Artists Guild. She worked as a commercial artist for International Shoe Company, and then turned to work as a watercolorist in St. Louis, Hilton Head, South Carolina and Vero Beach, Florida; the previous owner of the yearbook has added commentary and newspaper clippings of happenings to many of the senior class, some documenting the deaths of several in World War II, or by violence in St. Louis. Marriages of many of the women are recorded. Updated addresses and phone numbers of many former students are also added ; The yearbook has numerous articles written by students and show photographs and drawings in illustration. Subjects feature historical information about St. Louis, lists of artists, musicians with details of their lives and work are included ; all the artwork by the students reflects the then current Art Deco trends ; a very rare and historically important volume; and an exceedingly difficult-to-locate Saarinen collectible ; FINE. Book.
