Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover. Blue paper over boards with gold lettering on the spine. No date on title page. Copyright date 1925. 307 pages. In good condition. The binding is square, though a bit shaken. The edges and corners are bumped. Covers and lettering rubbed with a small stain on the front cover. The pages are toned, especially on the edges, but unmarked. Overall in good condition.

First Edition. 288 pages, indexed, with introductory notes by EM Forster, a facsimile of Mrs Fay's portrait, the original letters from India by Mrs Fay, reprinted from the 1st edition of 1817, and terminal notes by EM Forster. The book bears a bookplate for the Seafarers' Education Service on the front paste down, with an additional informatory plate pasted to the front free end page. There is a circular rubber stamp from the Education Service on the title page. The edges of the text block are age, and have trace of foxing, the end pages are offset tanned, but the main damage, is to the Green cloth of the binding, which is flecked, with some discolouration from handling (mishandling) with rubbing at the head and tail of the spine. "Eliza Fay is a work of art. But she was also a historical character, who wielded and resumed a pen, and from that point of view some brief notes may be acceptable; the reader can be trusted to forget them as soon as he enters her tremendous presence and gazes upon a pre-potent form. Some pages lightly foxed. Textblock clean and tight. Overall this is a very good copy but as the covers are tatty it would make a perfect candidate for an art book binding project.
