Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 263. Scarlet cloth, titles and rules stamped in gray on the spine, fore-edge untrimmed. Spine ends rubbed, top edge a bit dust soiled. With the small stamp of Bertrand Smith's Book Store ("Acres of Books") on front pastedown. In the color illustrated dust jacket with price $2 intact on the front flap: red spine titles sunned, spine ends chipped, rear panel lightly soiled. The jacket illustration, artist unidentified, is a diluted vision of the novel, likely tamped down for fear of alienating the prospective consumer. The women prisoners, for instance, are vaguely identified, and the prison houses resemble cottages. From the flap: "The excitement of this unusual novel derives from the impact of the over-wrought personalities of girls in a penal institution. The negro girls in a nearby house, like men in the outside world, represent evil, which both attracts and repels them."Swados graduated from Smith, was an editor at Time Magazine, spouse of historian Richard Hofstadter, and sister of writer Harvey Swados. She died in 1945 at age 29.A particularly rare novel covering the guttermost, as viewed by the uttermost. Quite scarce in hardcover with dust jacket. Dust jacket now preserved in a removable clear archival sleeve.
