Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Letter Headed Paper from the Commanding Chief Portsmouth and Signed by Admiral of the Fleet Richard James Meade, 4th Earl of Clanwilliam. Undated but C1890. The letter to Canon Jacob is with regards a request for him to be a chairman and to arrange a date to discuss. Admiral of the Fleet Richard James Meade, 4th Earl of Clanwilliam 1832-1907 was a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer, he served at the Battle of Escape Creek and at the Battle of Fatshan Creek during the campaign against Chinese pirates. He also took part in the Battle of Canton, where he was severely wounded, during the Second Opium War. As a senior officer Meade went on to be commander of the Steamship reserve at Portsmouth, commander of the Flying Squadron and Commander-in-Chief, North America and West Indies Station. His last appointment was as Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth Provenance: From the family of autograph collector Emily Mary Rose Lee (1869-1949), wife of Colonel William Crawford Walton (1864-1937). Emily was the daughter of William Lee, Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow from 1874 to 1886, and granddaughter of John Lee (1779-1859), Principal of Edinburgh University from 1840 to 1859. Tanning to the edges of the end papers. Very Good condition book in Good condition dust wrapper with small stains to the right edge of the front cover, small chips and related tears to the corners and spine ends, priced 31/6. SIGNED by the author to the front free end paper 'To Lieutenant Stephen King-Hall RN, With best wishes from the author, Jellicoe, 21st February 1919'. Stephen King-Hall was educated at Lausanne in Switzerland and at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, with the Grand Fleet, serving on HMS Southampton and 11th Submarine Flotilla. He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Navy in 1928, before resigning in 1929.
