The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. Black cloth boards have gilt lettering and illustrations on both front and spine. There is some light bumping, rubbing and light fraying to the spine ends and corners of the book covers along with a light cracking to the cloth at the bottom front spine joint. The cloth has some light rubbing and several spots of ground-in dirt. The text pages are clean and bright. The endpapers are fully illustrated and there are 12 full page black and white illustrations, along with head and tail pieces and other small illustrations throughout by Frank C. Papé. "Papé's first known work, for Emile Clement's Naughty Eric and Other Stories from Giant, Witch, and Fairyland, published in 1902, remains extremely rare. One copy is held by The British Library. An original pen and ink illustration from one of the stories, 'The Magic Stone', has been found in Sussex, England. "Falcon the Hunter" from The Russian Story Book (1916) Papé's next earliest illustrations are found in books for children from around 1908, including The Toils and Travels of Odysseus (1908) , a translation of The Odyssey by C. A. Pease; and Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1910). During the second decade of the 20th century, he made extensive contributions to the a number of collections of fairy, folk and other children's tales, as well as illustrating a collection of the Psalms. Small bookplate of the North of England School Furnishing Company to the front paste down. Illustrated with an illustration to the paste downs and endpapers, a frontispiece and eleven plates. Collated, complete. A historical novel, first published in 1893, which tells of the struggles of the young Jacques Ménétrier at the beginning of the 18th century. It was written by the French journalist and author Anatole France (1844-1924), who won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature. This edition was translated by Mrs. Wilfrid Jackson, and illustrated throughout by William J. Locke. 2 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with just some light shelf wear to the extremities and rear board. Front hinge is slightly strained but is held firmly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Very Good. book.
