First Edition
15 pp. 4to. 15 pp. 4to. The prolific "Queen of Gospel Song Writers" Fanny Crosby (b.1820 - d.1915) was an American missionary, lyricist, and poet whose work was incredibly prolific in the 19th century. Her Christian songs can still be found in hymnals today. Blind from infancy, Crosby said that her condition provided her the focus to dedicate herself to Christian endeavors and avoid distractions. The Flower Queen, the first secular cantata by an American composer. Written with composer George F. Root, it is an opera, written for girls, which "illustrated nineteenth-century American romanticism." Disbound pamphlet, no wrappers. Title page is soiled and moderately foxed along fore-edge and bottom, numbered at upper right corner in ink. Moderate foxing throughout and inner pages have some wrinkling; overall just about good, but a scarce first printing of the first American cantata.
